Hosting Beşiktaş in front of a full home crowd on Sunday 11 October, Türk Telekom made a very fast start. Baskets from Doğuş Özdemiroğlu and Ismael Bako put the hosts 7-0 up, and they led 16-4 by the sixth minute. Beşiktaş, who struggled from three-point range for a long time, tried to recover with two threes from Furkan Korkmaz at the end of the quarter. Türk Telekom closed the first period 24-14 ahead.

Where the game was decided: the second quarter

Türk Telekom opened the period with a 5-0 run, and a Jerrick Harding basket stretched the lead to 15 (29-14). Regularly finding Kris Bankston under the basket, the hosts went 20 points clear with a Shaq McKissic basket four minutes before the break (41-21) and went into the dressing room 51-27 up.

In the first half, Türk Telekom made 11 assists, did not miss a free throw (9/9) and scored 18 points from their opponents’ turnovers. Beşiktaş, effective on the offensive boards but struggling to find the basket, made only 3 of their 16 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes and turned the ball over 10 times.

Second half

Türk Telekom started the second half quickly as well, and this time McKissic stood out. His back-to-back baskets made it 59-29 in the first four minutes of the third quarter, a 30-point lead. Solid in defence for the rest of the quarter and still scoring through Harding, the hosts started the final period 70-46 ahead. Nothing changed in a slower final 10 minutes, and the game ended 88-63. The second half was evenly matched at 37-36; the 24-point lead built in the first half decided the result.

Standout performers

For Türk Telekom, Harding made all three of his three-point attempts and was the game’s top scorer with 21 points. Doğuş Özdemiroğlu contributed in every area of the game with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Bankston and Uros Trifunovic scored 14 each, Bako 11 and McKissic 10. Beşiktaş’s most effective player was David DeJulius with 16 points; Conor Morgan scored 10. The Black-and-Whites finished the game with 36 per cent shooting from the field and 17 turnovers, and suffered their second league defeat.

After the game

Speaking to the broadcaster after the game, Türk Telekom head coach Erdem Can credited the win to the team’s toughness in defence, their determination and the way they shared the ball in attack. Pointing out that they had faced a EuroLeague team, Can said the season is long and that they want to keep sharing the ball while raising their intensity and pace.
